BATS and RABIES

Recently a rabid bat was identified in the Village of Kenmore. If you should have a bat in your residence, please contact the Erie County Health Department or the Town of Tonawanda Animal Control Department.

Only 4% of bats tested have rabies, but as you know, rabies is fatal once symtoms occur. With treatment, it is 100% preventable.  Shots can be avoided if the animal can be tested and the tests are negative.  Unless the animal is captured and tested, you will need to get rabies shots if:

You or your pet are bitten by a bat or if saliva or other material from a bat gets into your eyes, nose mouth or wound

You wake up and find a bat in your room

You are unsure if there has been contact with a person or pet

You see a bat in a room with a child, etc.

KENMORE WINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

December 2011

Business First has named the Village of Kenmore as the highest-rated community in Western New York. Kenmore holds 1,328th place among 3,764 municipalities throughout the United States! The full article can be found at the following site:

In other exciting news, Iskalo Development won the 2011 WNY Real Estate Development of the Year for its building located 2780 Delaware Avenue in the Village of Kenmore. Iskalo worked closely with the Village of Kenmore Board of Trustees, Planning Board, and Zoning Board to create a classic design which blended in with the character of Kenmore’s restricted use business district. The building houses professional medical offices on the upper level and retail on the lower level.

The American Planning Association has named the Village of Kenmore as “One of the Top 10 Great Neighborhoods” in the United States for 2009 as part of its Great Places in America Program.  The program recognizes 10 communities throughout the country for exceptional character and planning.

Kenmore was singled out for its historic architecture, walk-able design, accessibility, functionality, the commitment of its government officials, and for its community involvement.  The Village, which recently celebrated its 110th anniversary of incorporation, is also one the Country’s 100 most dense urban areas, according to the 2000 census.

“We are thrilled to be named one of the Top 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2009.  Everyone who lives and works in Kenmore knows what a special place this is,” stated Mayor Patrick Mang.

“Kenmore has so much to offer – beautiful homes, a strong business district, excellent public safety and emergency services – but its greatest asset is its people and the strong sense of community you find here,” said Trustee Paul Catalano.

APA Chief Executive Officer Paul Farmer, FAICP noted that “Kenmore shows how valuable and important all of American’s first-ring suburbs are to the metropolitan areas” and that “Kenmore is truly a model worth emulating.”

The other communities recognized as Great Neighborhoods for 2009 included Pasadena CA, New Orleans LA, Houston, TX, Newport News VA, Franklin TN, Portland OR, Fargo ND, Lincoln NE and Spokane, WA.

A formal presentation will be made on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 11 a.m. on the Municipal Green located at the corner of Delaware Avenue and Delaware Road.  All are welcome to attend!

As you know, the Village has experienced the same rat problem that faces so many Western New York communities. The Village has been working diligently with Erie County to address complaints. In order for any rat program to be effective, however, we need your help. You can help by eliminating food sources and shelter areas for rodents. The best way to eliminate food sources for rats is through the proper storage of your garbage.
